On Monday, April 10th, the University of Louisville College Republicans held their first annual Legacy Dinner. The dinner was held in the Multipurpose Room at the Student Activities Center.

The keynote address was given by Republican Party of Kentucky chairman Darrell Brock, and other dignitaries in attendance included Larry Cox, state director for Senator Mitch McConnell; Councilman Glen Stuckel; Linda Greenwell, candidate for state auditor; and several other candidates. Representatives from Congresswoman Anne Northup's campaign also attended the dinner.

Some attendees also may have been surprised as another attendee as well: Democratic candidate for Congress Jimmy Moore. Moore purchased tickets for himself and several others.

"I wanted to come," he said, adding, "I learned a lot."

Brock urged the attendees to get involved in politics and related how he almost became a Cardinal, before choosing Eastern Kentucky University at literally the last minute.

The chairman told students that political involvement begins at the grassroots level and that this later leads to advancement within the party. He stressed the importance of volunteering on campaigns and taking initiative to get involved.

Brock also cited the state Republican Party's grassroots organization as a major factor in recent electoral success.

Larry Cox, Senator Mitch McConnell's statewide director drew the largest laugh from the crowd when he spoke of how much fun politics could be.

"Politics - the most fun you can have with your clothes on," Cox said, crediting Senator McConnell with the statement.

The U of L College Republicans sold tickets to the dinner to raise money for their organization to enable them to become more active. The dinner featured a door prize giveaway of a box at the Pegasus Parade. Gift certificates to local restaurants and even tickets to the Jay Leno Show were also raffled off.

U of L College Republicans chairwoman Samantha Prater said that the group intends to make the Legacy Dinner an annual event. She said that Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher will be speaking at next spring's dinner.

The CR's are actively involved in many other political activities on campus and throughout the community. They participate in campaigns, assist when prominent national politicians visit Louisville, attend conventions, and volunteer in the community. They meet on a bi-weekly basis.
